Projects and Experience

Over 40 Years Experience
Apprenticeship

My apprenticeship as an Electrical Fitter / Mechanic commenced in December 1976 at Lane Amalgamated Hardware in Clyde Street Hamilton North, a Suburb of Newcastle.

Lanes Hardware was a Manufacturer of Hardware, Locking Systems, Rabbit Traps, Train Carriage Ventilation Holes & Pit Roof Washers to name some products. Lanes had it's own platting, painting, die cast, pressing, assembly and warehousing processes and facilities.

As a maintenance based electrician I assisted in all electrical installation work, maintenance and breakdown works, in a team which was initially 5 personnel.

Post Apprenticeship

With Lane Amalgamated Hardware having taken a major downturn and being caught in a large layoff of 240 personnel, which was nearly 50% of the overall staffing level, the General Manager of Lanes arranged for me to attend an interview at Nesca. Nesca was the name of Newcastle's electrical distribution supplier, now days known as Ausgrid.

Starting at Nesca I was placed in the transformer section where Nesca manufactured it's own transformers. I formed part of the construction team and manufacturing the inner section of the transformers from scratch, which included lamination's, low and high voltage winding's, testing, baking. filling the tanks with oil, submersion, more testing, sealing and dispatch for live testing.
